Targeting on Meta: In the Advantage+ era, the algorithm and your creative decide
November 20, 2025 · Hanna Tuomisto
Targeting in Meta advertising has changed fundamentally. Privacy restrictions and iOS updates have thinned out the detailed interest categories, and automation has taken their place: you define the goal and the boundaries, and the algorithm finds the audience for you. What matters now is a clear goal, your own data, and creative content, not a hand-built audience.
Three ground rules for targeting today
Advantage+ automations. You set the goal and the limits, and Meta handles the rest. When you give the algorithm the freedom to expand targeting based on results, it finds audiences you would never have thought to define yourself.
Broad targeting. Once the demographic basics are in order, the extra gains come from giving the system room to seek out the best audiences. Additional restrictions narrow the audience pool and slow down learning.
Your own data and signals. Custom Audiences, conversion events, CRM lists, and video viewers tell the algorithm who has genuine interest. This is now more valuable than lookalike audiences.
Why broad targeting works
Broad targeting works when the campaign has a clear optimization event and your measurement sends those events reliably, either through the pixel or the Conversions API. Without a proper signal, the algorithm optimizes for nothing. Signal quality matters more than the precision of your targeting.
Your own data is worth its weight in gold
Retargeting reaches people who have already shown interest, and they are worth segmenting by what they did. CRM lists work as a signal and enable both retargeting and exclusions. Dynamic retargeting combines your product catalog with the pixel, so the ad shows exactly the products a user looked at.
Lookalike audiences are still worth testing, but you should not build your strategy around them. Exclusions matter, but keep in mind that because of iOS and browser restrictions, not every conversion is recorded, so exclusion lists are never perfect.
B2B and funnel thinking
B2B decision-makers are on Meta too. What matters is giving the algorithm the right cues and building a funnel that moves the decision-maker toward getting in touch. In prospecting, you offer content that builds your expertise; in retargeting, the message gets sharper; and at the conversion stage, the audience is small and the call to action is clear.
Creative content is part of targeting
As targeting settings shrink, the content becomes the targeting. The algorithm reads your creative and uses it as a signal for who the ad suits. Put effort into making the content speak the language of the right audience, and you help the algorithm find them.
Measurement and testing
Set your conversion events to the things that carry business value, and track how leads progress using UTM parameters, for example. Effective audiences are found only by experimenting: test creative, measure results, and scale what works.
