What a conversion means and how to set up conversion tracking
November 17, 2022 · Updated July 16, 2026 · Matti Hirvonen
A conversion is a valuable event for your business, like an online store purchase, a quote request, or an inquiry. Conversion tracking is a way to measure these events, and it tells you what in your advertising actually delivers results. Without it, you’re spending your media budget on guesswork.
What a conversion is
All the major ad platforms, like Google Ads, Meta, and LinkedIn, let you track advertising results. When a site visitor completes an action that’s valuable to your business, they convert. With conversion tracking, your reports show directly how many conversions each campaign, ad, keyword, or audience has brought in.
Tracking isn’t just for reporting. When you tell the ad platform which ads deliver results, its AI and optimization start steering the budget in the right direction. Without conversion data, the platform optimizes for clicks, not sales.
How to set up conversion tracking
You set up conversion tracking by installing the ad platform’s tracking code on your site. Each platform has its own, for example Meta advertising uses the Meta pixel. The code is installed on the page where the goal is completed, typically the thank-you page for an order or a form.
You can add the code straight into the page’s source, or manage it with Google Tag Manager. This step often takes technical know-how, so it’s natural to handle it together with your web partner or a digital marketing agency.
What conversion tracking is good for
Once tracking is in place, you can concretely calculate what a result costs. You’ll see, for example, how much one quote request costs in each channel, or the return at which a euro invested in advertising comes back as sales.
This changes how advertising is managed. Instead of judging results by gut feel, you make decisions with numbers: you add budget where it delivers and cut what doesn’t. Reliable conversion tracking is essential for effective digital advertising.
